Goodyear Fortera Tires Reflect Popularity of SUVs

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 12, 2005 — Fact: Vehicle design has become more specialized over the years, and the development of the various components that make up those vehicles also has been more targeted for specific needs.

That explains this year's introduction of two tires from Goodyear, which specifically target SUV drivers. The tires are the just-announced Goodyear Fortera featuring TripleTred Technology and the Fortera featuring SilentArmor Technology.

"We spent considerable time talking to owners of SUVs and crossover vehicles, and they told us what they wanted in tires," said Sanjay Sivanandan, vice president, Goodyear consumer tires. "Working from the market back, we challenged our design engineers to build tires that reflect the consumer desires of this burgeoning segment.

"In recent years, the trend in vehicles has been toward pickup trucks and SUVs replacing cars in the family garage. These vehicles give the driver the best of both worlds, the ability to drive from the paved road to the soccer field to the work site, while delivering a smooth, quiet ride. At Goodyear, we believe tires are an integral part of the vehicle and can help provide this experience."

The estimated increase in demand for P-metric tires on light-trucks and SUVs is 15 percent for 2005, compared to 2004 figures. This is a trend that shows no immediate signs of slowing down, according to projections from the Rubber Manufacturers Association (RMA).

"Despite record-high gas prices, these are vehicle segments that are increasingly popular, primarily because the buyers have made lifestyle statements about what they want. SUV owners choose their vehicles because they want a perfect combination of style and utility," explained Sivanandan.

"When it comes to tires, these drivers don't want to settle for compromise. They expect their tires to provide the traction necessary to travel in any weather, whether they are driving in wet, snowy, icy or dry weather conditions."

The Fortera featuring TripleTred Technology has three zones – Water Zone, Ice Zone and Dry Zone – that promote superb traction in any kind of weather. This lets drivers confidently take on rain-drenched highways, icy or snowy roads, or dry pavement.

The Fortera featuring SilentArmor Technology employs an Armor Zone that is comprised of a layer made with DuPont KEVLAR, a DurawallTM sidewall to help withstand cuts, and a rugged Rim Guard that help protect wheels from curb damage. On the comfort side, the tire includes an extra absorbent layer to soak up road noise for a smooth and quiet ride.
