Goodyear's Advice: Get a Grip, Winter is Coming

AKRON, Ohio, Sept. 12, 2005 — In the midst of mild temperatures and a colorful autumn, motorists may not be in the mood to think about snow, ice and slush. However, they can quickly be reminded that the gripping power of their tires may play a part in the comfort level of their winter driving.

Often, the first snowfall of the season catches drivers unprepared, and for many in the U.S. and Canada, the first snow falls in October.

With this in mind, Goodyear officials said motorists shouldn't wait much longer to improve their traction on slippery, slushy, or snow-covered roads and highways. It's not too late to consider a set of new tires for the family car or SUV.

According to Todd Hershberger, Goodyear's marketing manager for light-truck tires, "Along with the antifreeze and battery check-ups, an inspection of the tire tread should be a year-round practice, and especially as we prepare for potential slippery road conditions."

Hershberger recommends a set of winter tires for motorists in severe winter regions, or at least a strong year-round tire like the new announced Goodyear Fortera featuring TripleTred Technology . This tire, for SUVs, features three unique tread zones for superior traction in any kind of weather. This gives drivers more confidence on rain-drenched highways, icy or snowy roads, or dry pavement.

The Water Zone has a new silica-based compound that helps to provide traction in wet conditions while also maximizing treadwear.

The Ice Zone compound is comprised of polymers that provide enhanced low-temperature flexibility for outstanding winter performance. Traction-enhancing particles and fibers made from volcanic sand and fiberglass create increased micro-textures for traction on icy or slick roads.

The Outer Dry Zone features a rubber compound inspired by the technology used in Goodyear's ultra-high performance and racing tires. This new compound helps provide superb grip on dry surfaces.

The year-round tire is backed by a 60,000-mile (96,000-kilometer) treadlife limited warranty, 30-day No Obligation Trial Period, roadside assistance program, nationwide warranty service, on-line product registration and tire rotation reminder service.

Hershberger reminds motorists that last winter included heavy amounts of snow – including record seasonal snowfall totals in many areas – and the deep freeze felt by much of the northern U.S. last winter created lots of slick surfaces.

"No matter the kind of vehicle, or whether the vehicle includes a four-wheel drive system, the condition of the tires plays a role in the level of traction and grip in inclement weather," said Hershberger.
